Course Spotlight

Persimmon Ridge Golf Club

Before playing Persimmon, I had heard so many great things about the course from various people. I had heard it was one of the best in the state of Kentucky, one of the most difficult, and a must play for the serious golfer. I like to think I’m a serious golfer and I like a challenge so I gave it a go. I must say, it was very nice track, but I wasn’t totally impressed with it. I’m not sure if it was just a bad time of the year for the course (don’t know why that would be in prime golfing season) or if I had simply heard so many people build the course up to be one of if not the top course in the state that I expected something Augusta Nationalesque.

The course is private, but I know someone that knows someone, so I was lucky enough to get the chance to play it. Even with my connection to the course, I paid $80 for my weekend round. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve played a lot of courses in my lifetime and when a course is in the area of $80, especially in Kentucky, I’m expecting near perfect conditions for golf and it just wasn’t up to my standards. Persimmon has rolling bent grass fairways that leading to medium, very sloping, multi-tiered greens. The tee area was great, but the rest of the course was very firm. Most drives were rolling a good 30 yards extra, some even more than that. With the firm conditions It made it difficult to hit any shot off of the fairway. The bunkers had WAY to much sand in them. I have actually never played a course before with as much sand as Persimmon had in theirs. The greens were fairly fast and surprisingly, as bad as they looked with all the ball marks and patches of poa annua, they rolled very true. My only other complaint is the course markings. Yardage markings were good, but the course markings leading you to the next hole were terrible. I think went down the wrong path three or four times before having to turn around and go back after realizing that the next hole must not be in the direction we were headed. I heard talks of them changing the layout of the course and even adding a couple holes (and a whole new nine?). I can only assume that the lack of course markings were because of the changes the course was going though.

All in all, you could definitely tell this is a nice course. I’m guessing that I just caught it at an off time. I’m not sold on the price tag, but I think with the course in top shape, it could definitely be worth the price of admission. I got the feeling that they are basically charging green fees based on the mystique surrounding the course as being “most difficult in the state.”

I apologize for not taking any pictures of the course. I intended on taking some but I forgot my camera.
