I consider Kearney Hill my “home” course since I play and practice there so much. You can usually find me at the practice area a few nights a week working on my game and am usually there on Sunday mornings for a round.
Kearney Hill is definitely one of my favorite courses to play as it’s always in great shape and it’s challenging enough to make you think on a few shots, but forgiving enough to give you a break every now and again. These days I probably let my guard down a little too much when I’m out there because I feel like I know the course like the back of my hand and don’t take it as serious as I should.
The staff is always very nice and the facilities are top of the line. As soon as you pull into the parking lot you see this enormous club house and immediately know you’re at a very nice place. All aspects of the course are generally in top condition except for the bunkers. I never really have figured the bunkers out to be honest. The only thing I can figure is they consider all of the bunkers “waste areas” rather than actual “bunkers.” Majority of them have little sand in them, are usually pretty hard and look like they’ve not been raked for a while. It’s just really surprising to me that the course is kept in such good shape, but they let the bunkers go.
The one thing you’ll want to watch out for is the wind. There are not many tree’s at Kearney as it’s more of a links style layout. Because of this, the wind seems to blow constantly and Kearney Hill, and blow hard. Most of the rounds I’ve played there I’ve had to fight the wind the whole day. It always seems to be in your face too, no matter what hole you’re on.
Regardless, it’s still a great course and I would recommend it to anyone living or visiting the Lexington, KY area.
I also recommend Carmello Benassi if your swing decides to head South for the winter a bit early this year. Whenever something doesn’t feel right with my swing I schedule and appointment with Carmello. A second set of eyes (and a good second set at that) is always a good thing to have.
